Providence Health & Services Case Cart Technician in Santa Monica, California


Providence is calling a Case Cart Technician to the Operating Room for Full-Time Evening Shift to Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.

We are seeking a Case Cart Technician Surgery who will assist in carrying out the responsibilities for the overall work flow of the shift in OR case cart preparation to which he/she is assigned. The Case Cart Technician will be responsible for the overall coordination of assigned case cart related duties as per the established job duty list. It is expected that a Case Cart Technician will accomplish case cart related tasks accurately and completely to ensure the surgical staff have all the necessary supplies and instruments needed to accomplish the designated surgical procedure.

In this position you will:

  • Perform, without supervision, all the functions expected of a Case Cart Technician and serves as a resource for all the following functions:

  • Accurately assemble simple and complex surgical case carts from a variety of surgical specialties without supervision

  • Assume lead role for functional area (e.g. OR Core)

  • Practice proper operation of the current hospital’s automated OR scheduling computer system

  • Consistently complete review of OR schedule and selected case cart pick lists and communicates any conflicts to management

  • Demonstrate knowledge of instruments and supplies used in surgical procedures at SJHC

  • Dispense sterile supplies to the appropriate locations on case carts and other sterile supply holding carts

  • Inspect sterile storage supply areas and rotate instrument sets and supplies to assure proper sterility guidelines are followed

  • Follow protocol for completing case carts in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy

  • Operate OR sterilization equipment and hospital elevators, cart washers, computer and related office equipment

  • Differentiate between steam and all other sterilization modalities

  • Package supplies according to specifications and appropriate method of sterilization

  • Perform duties according to the standards set by the Joint Commission AORN, AAMI and SJHC

  • Responsibility to make changes in work schedules or duties when necessary for the overall work and prioritization of case cart related functions

  • Participate with supervisor and director in planning for the future needs of the specific shift as a whole, including but not limited to:

  • Personnel Needs

  • Program Development

  • Intradepartmental Relationships

  • Supply/ Instrument/ Equipment Needs


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • 3 years Surgical instrument processing setting or materials management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of many people across a broad range of background(s) and ages

  • Good communication skills, collaborative and courteous

  • Ability to work in a cooperative manner

  • Willing to perform tasks that may be required for the smooth running of Surgery to meet the needs of safe delivery of patient care

  • Ability to assess, identify, and respond to urgent/emergent requests for instruments, supplies, and equipment in an efficient, effective, and appropriate manner

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, supply and instrument descriptions

  • Knowledgeable of and comply with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and the Medical Center

  • Ability to operate fairly complex machinery including HI-VAC sterilizes, ultrasonic washers, low temperature sterilizers, etc.

  • Ability to acquire a thorough knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique and to apply these principles when carrying out the various assignments in the surgery core

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • OR materials management or as an OR technician

  • Surgical instrumentation and supplies

  • Operating room and sterile processing
