We are seeking a Clincial Educator (RN) who will collaborate with the Director of Education, Nursing Research and Education Council and other clinical educators to promote and foster staff development. Coordinate and provide for the educational needs of staff throughout the organization. Provide a variety of functions related to professional goals of individuals. Participate in maintaining compliance with the Joint Commission (TJC) and Center for Medicare/Medicaid (CMC) standards and conditions of participation. Have oversight for clinical practice, thus require possession of clinical knowledge concerning the applicable standards, guidelines, and regulations to analyze, direct and facilitate nursing care of patients with a variety of wound, ostomy and continence needs. Assess and meet the education needs of nursing staff.

In this position you will:

  • Propose and or recommend practice and policy changes based on the current industry trends, and concurrent regulatory, and accreditation requirements

  • Research and formulate policy and procedures

  • Facilitate the orientation of new staff members, assisting with the orientation of the Medical staff

  • Assure competencies all levels annually and otherwise

  • Conduct performance improvement activities that are identified in need of education/training

  • Perform patient assessment, data collection and patient education

  • Participate in goal directed plan of care based on patient outcomes

  • Implement care based on department and hospital standards

  • Delegate duties and assignments to appropriate team members

  • Demonstrate applied knowledge when caring for selected patient populations including care appropriate to the age of patients served

  • Demonstrates competency in selected clinical skills including, but not limited to:

  • Physical and psychosocial assessment

  • Interpretation of basic laboratory values as related to wound healing

  • Administration of topical medications related to wound care

  • Wound assessment and monitoring

  • Assessment for specialty bed needs

  • Set up and management of wound care equipment: Wound VAC, compression devices, ostomy, wound and skin care dressings, drainage devices, ostomy pouches

  • Demonstrate competency in selected educational activities including, but not limited to:

  • Conduct education needs assessments

  • Implement educational programs based on adult learning theory

  • Collaborate with Nursing Education and Research Council, Director of Education and the Chief Nursing Officer on educational programs and initiatives

  • Participate in Annual Skill Lab, Orientation and other formal educational programs

  • Assess, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regard to:

  • Attendance, punctuality and patient confidentiality

  • Positive public relation image and working relationships

  • Obtain necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence and certifications

  • Complete all mandatory requirements, including annual safety programs, BLS, infection control and annual physical

  • Specialty certification

  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department and hospital goals by:

  • Attend and participate in team meetings

  • Volunteer or accept assignment for projects

  • Abide by mission, vision and team ground rules

  • Demonstrate adherence to documentation guidelines on patient care records and unit forms

  • Attend and participate in meetings related to education and/or wound care including those related to quality and professional practice

  • Perform staff education based on needs assessment and as directed by Director of Education

  • QUALITY OF WORK:

  • Comply with the Department of Education and Hospital established principles, practices and standards

  • Keep Charge Nurse and/or Director, Case Manager or MD informed of patient care issues, needs and problems in a timely manner so that problem resolution may take place without delay

  • Serve as a clinical resource to staff members

  • Document care rendered following established guidelines for documentation

  • Participate willingly and cooperatively in educational offerings to maintain or attain a level of knowledge

  • Recommend and take action for corrections to the system without having to be so directed

  • Maintain current status of certifications, annual physicals and licensure without having to be so directed

  • Participate in the data collection for quality improvement processes, including but not limited to NDNQI

  • Perform activities in a timely manner (prioritizing, assessment, and minimal interruptions)

  • Proactively obtain physician orders required or indicated for diagnostic tests and assessing patient care, educational and discharge needs

  • Ensure that information pertinent (and required) for care of individual patient(s) is on the chart and MD informed as to patient progress

  • PRODUCTIVITY & USE OF TIME:

  • Practice cost-effective methods in the delivery of care through efficient use of available resources and completing assignments on time with minimal overtime

  • Use downtime effectively without being so directed:

  • Assist others

  • Accomplish assigned projects

  • Volunteering for additional tasks

  • Verbally and behaviorally supports management's guidelines and objectives regarding fiscal budget goals

  • Having a minimal amount of sick calls per annum, as established by hospital policy and protocol

  • Flexe hours of work in order to meet departmental budgetary objectives

  • INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS & TEAMWORK:

  • Maintain an effective interdepartmental and public relationship by keeping open lines of communication

  • Anticipate needs of the team and ensuring smooth operational flow

  • Initiate problem resolution for identified opportunities for improvement or difficult interpersonal situations

  • Demonstrate a consistent positive and professional attitude in all interactions (including conflicts) with:

  • Patients and families

  • Physicians

  • Co-workers

  • Participate in departmental in-services in a consistent and positive manner

  • Respond to identified team and/or patient care needs by directly assisting other department staff members without being so directed

  • Perform additional duties and tasks as requested by the Director Patient Access and Care, Team Leader, in a positive manner

  • Demonstrate motivation and creativity in suggesting ways to increase team cohesiveness

  • Facilitate the integration of new personnel into the group in a positive, non-threatening manner

  • Behaviorally support goals and objectives of the department

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Nursing degree (BSN)

  • Minimum of two (2) years recent experience as a Registered Nurse

  • Previous experience providing staff education in an acute care facility

  • Previous experience in quality management, data collection and reporting

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate patient care

  • Clinically skilled in Med-Surg nursing

  • Ability to deal effectively with many people across a broad range of cultural backgrounds and ages

  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision

  • Proficient in P.C. software applications including, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate work

  • Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of Saint John Health System

  • Applies, interprets and ensures that hospital policies and nursing practice guidelines are followed

  • Ability to work effectively with many people at various levels of the organization

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and appropriately prioritize

  • Ability to clearly communicate with internal and external customers, including, but not limited to, patients, co-workers, management, physicians, and visitors

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance to hospital policy

  • Participates as assigned in the annual staff evaluations as appropriate by providing written or verbal feedback to the charge nurses/directors in a timely order

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
