Providence Health & Services Emergency Department Technician in Santa Monica, California

Providence is calling a Full time, Evening shift Emergency Department Technician to Saint Johns Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.

We are seeking a Emergency Department Technician who will support the Mission and Vision of Saint John's Health Center. This is achieved in their daily responsibilities of providing direct patient care and clerical support within the Emergency Room. Performance expectations and job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Demonstrate teamwork and initiative by cooperating and interacting with physicians, physician assistants, interdepartmental staff, patients and families to maintain communication resulting in positive patient outcomes.

  • Maintain productivity by establishing priorities and practicing cost effective methods in the delivery of care and performing assigned duties.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Prioritize and perform work assignment and job duties effectively and provide prompt and efficient customer service

  • Conduct job duties in accordance with Health Center and Department procedures

  • Identify and report potential and actual risk management issues to appropriate personnel

  • Demonstrate competency in selected skills including but not limited to:

  • Performing clerical duties related to admission, transfer, discharge and ongoing care of patients

  • Performing direct patient care activities delegated by registered nurses and medical staff

  • Ensuring proper maintenance of contents of medical record

  • Reporting STAT orders to the appropriate Team members within acceptable time frames

  • Executing computer related order entry

  • Managing resources such as office supplies, materials, and forms efficiently

  • Demonstrating good telephone etiquette at all times, answering and directing all calls promptly and correctly

  • Understanding and utilizing the PAX (Radiology viewing computer), the EKG computer, arrhythmia monitors, Reddinet system, and other department equipment

  • Provide direct patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Assists medical staff in treatment of patients consistent with their demonstrated competencies and hospital defined scope-of-practice. These delegated and/or assistive responsibilities routinely include:

  • Assisting Emergency Department patients to and from the ambulance bay and parking structure

  • Assisting with the positioning of, and holding patients during suturing, lumbar punctures, blood draws, IV’s, etc.

  • Transporting stable and non-fragile patients inter/intra-departmentally, e.g., Fast Track, Radiology

  • Assisting Transport Team and/or nursing staff transporting patients to the inpatient units

  • Serving as chaperone for pelvic and rectal exams by medical staff.

  • Assisting stable and non-fragile patients with activities of daily living, e.g., ambulating to bathroom, eating, etc.

  • Accompanying patient from Lobby to treatment area and orienting patient to surroundings, nurse call light, etc.

  • Performing EKG’s, attaching patient to cardiac monitors, and promptly informing nurse and/or physician of serious arrythmias identified by automated arrhythmia detection software and resulting alarms

  • Assisting Security and nursing staff to restrain violent patients, and monitoring safety and wellbeing of patients who need constant observation for the protection of the patient and/or others

  • Assisting with post-mortem care and transfers to morgue

  • Responding to the patient’s bedside to answering call lights

  • Performing other direct patient care duties for stable and non-fragile patients within approved hospital defined scope-of-practice at the direction and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse

  • Demonstrate responsibility for own professional practice in regards to:

  • Time and attendance

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill to maintain competence

  • Completing mandatory educational and proficiency requirements

  • Attending and participating in departmental staff meetings

  • Volunteering for and accepting assignments or projects

  • Performing other patient care or clerical duties as assigned

  • Practice in a professional, collaborative and proactive manner in all interactions with patients, visitors, physicians and staff:

  • Demonstrate flexibility adjusting to changes with administrative and patient care duties

  • Maintain a positive public relations image, including patient confidentiality, with other employees, physicians, patients and visitors at all times in the ED, in patient rooms, on the phone, in the elevator and in any public place

  • Identifying risk management issues and communicating potential problems to the appropriate personnel

  • Practice cost effective methods in the delivery of care:

  • Using available resources efficiently

  • Demonstrating understanding of overall Unit needs and using downtime to assist others

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of EMT 1 Training program or equivalent educ/experience

  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Knowledgeable in general medical terminology

  • Computer literate with word processor skills

  • Able to demonstrate understanding of overall Unit needs, work independently, and require minimal supervision

  • Able to establish priorities appropriately and organize job responsibilities

  • Able to adapt readily and demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in Unit activity

  • Able to answer telephones and answer or direct calls efficiently

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years work experience
