We are seeking a Manager Surgical Services who will be accountable for managing and coordinating quality patient care in a cost-effective manner, complying with patient care standards and job-specific performance standards through observation of clinical practice and implementation of quality assurance. Supervises operating room clinical staff. Manages the professional nursing care for patients in Surgical and procedurals areas. Assesses, plans, evaluates and documents the Nursing process in the assigned unit as needed. Functions as a resource person with primary responsibility for staff's performance and development. Demonstrates behavior practices that reflect the mission and vision of our sponsors, Swedish Edmonds and our Standards of Conduct and Civility in the workplace guidelines.

In this position you will:

  • Support the Performance Improvement process.

  • Follow and supports hospital policies. Follows the principles and requirements outlined in the Commitments and Compliance Integrity Program Employee Handbook and any other organizational or departmental materials related to compliance with laws and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors.

  • Patient-Care Positions: Considers individual needs in communication with, assessment of, and treatment of patients and staff, including ethical, cultural, psychosocial, religious, and age-specific aspects to include infant through the elderly.

  • Support patient rights and the organization’s code of ethical behavior.

  • Regular and predictable attendance is required for all positions. Failure to meet this standard can result in progressive discipline up to and including termination.

  • Maintain own appropriate personal and professional skill level to perform all key management responsibilities.

  • Contribute to positive unit and corporate image in the community.

  • Participate in the development of new programs and review of current practices, and ensures that departmental policies and procedures are developed, followed, and maintained.

  • Plan, develop, implement, and function within established departmental budgets.

  • Effectively plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs department activities to achieve objectives, operate within budget, and comply with regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain a system that tracks qualifications, experience, and accomplishments of each member of the Surgical and Interventional Services units and accepts responsibility for effective employee performance and competency.

  • Provide for open, effective communication and accepts responsibility for efficient and effective interaction of own department with other departments, Medical Staff, and Swedish Providence Health Services.

  • Maintain the quality standards of practice for Surgical and Interventional Services.

  • Adhere to Clinical Surgical and Interventional Services Manager and Supervisor job dimensions as needed and maintains clinical competencies.

  • Assist staff in accomplishing daily breaks and covering shifts in the absence of bargaining unit nurses.

  • Interview, hire, evaluate, and disciplines employees in collaboration with the Director of Surgical and Interventional Services.

  • Strive to maintain care giver engagement, high morale among direct reports by evaluating performance fairly, treating staff in a dignified manner, taking appropriate action with the staff, and keeping the staff informed of matters.

  • Facilitate staff attendance at in-service and continuing education programs.

  • Provide a staff education program for departmental orientation, continuing education, and skills training programs for personnel, coordinating these with the Education Department when appropriate.

  • Promote good public relations with patients, visitors, and the community. Immediately investigates patient complaints; investigates care incidents and documents them on incident reports.

  • Assure safety of all staff and patients through continuous monitoring of all departments for compliance with infection control programs, policies and procedures as appropriate.

  • Promote and maintain harmonious and effective relationships and communications within the department and between nursing services and other departments.

  • Demonstrate balanced clinical business and human relationship skills.

  • Provide coverage as acting Director of Surgical and Interventional Services as needed.

  • Review all EQVR reports and action taken.

  • Work with the Operating Room Coordinators and Endo Charge nurse to Investigates new nursing techniques, practices, equipment and products.

  • Participate on hospital committees and in community educational health programs as requested by Director of Surgical and Interventional Services.

  • Keep abreast of current nursing literature and research findings.

  • Must be able to assume the role of Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and be responsible for ensuring that all safety tasks and educational requirements are in place.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

  • Current RN licensure by the California State Department of Health.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required at time of hire from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).

  • 3 years Progressively responsible nursing management experience (leadership experience such as Charge Nurse or Nursing Supervisor in an acute care hospital).

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work well with physicians and staff.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to partner with chief of surgery to hardwire our patient safety/quality initiatives.

  • Must demonstrate an understanding of the surgery processes to enable streamlining of daily routines and overall processes.

  • Must exhibit "change agent" abilities and the understanding needed to affect the cultural change necessary to move into the new era of health care.

  • Operational knowledge of all department-specific equipment.

  • Good understanding of all current unit-specific health practices.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • CNOR and/or CPAN certification
