Providence Health & Services Nurse Manager - Emergency Department in Santa Monica, California


Providence is calling a Nurse Manager - Emergency Department (Full Time/Day Shift) to Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.

We are seeking a Nurse Manager - Emergency Department who will be under the general supervision of the Administrative Director, the Nurse Manager plans, leads and organizes the daily operations of assigned units and administers patient care as needed. The Nurse Manager will ensure that the quality of patient care meets all accrediting, bio ethical, and professional standards.

In this position you will:

  • Plan, lead and organize the daily operations of assigned units

  • Manage unit workflow, assess staffing needs and productivity, flexing when appropriate

  • Manage employee, physician, and patient concerns

  • Complete and approve payroll accurately and timely

  • Manage budget, supply orders and inventory

  • Assess and evaluate employee performance, recognizing exemplary performance, and identifies opportunities for performance improvement

  • Administer and control narcotics

  • Comply with hospital, department and unit standards, including but not limited to safety, CPR, infection control, quality management, environmental, confidentiality, and patient care

  • Perform assessment/data collection

  • Perform physical assessment

  • Perform ongoing assessment of patients and patient care area

  • Formulate a goal directed plan of care based on patient outcomes

  • Initiate, individualize, and modify plan of intervention

  • Collaborate with other services

  • Plan discharge/transfers

  • Implement care based on department and hospital standards

  • Follow established protocols and procedures

  • Evaluates effectiveness of care

  • Identify patient/significant other learning needs and demonstrates measures to meet these needs

  • Delegate to appropriate patient care team members

  • Demonstrate applied knowledge when caring for selected patient populations including care appropriate to the age of patients served on the unit

  • Demonstrate competency in selected clinical skills including, but not limited to:

  • Perform physical assessment, IV therapy, and GI/GU intubation

  • Administer PO, IM, SQ, and topical medications

  • Measure vital signs, intake and output

  • Use equipment such as IV infusion pump, glucometer, restraints and computer programs

  • Demonstrate Management skills including:

  • Act as a resource for team members in budgeting, scheduling, work assignments, leading team meetings, quality improvement activities, conflict resolution, intra-team representation and time cards

  • Assist in evaluating and documenting employee performance

  • Develop staff skills

  • Communicate deviation from standards of practice

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regards to:

  • Attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality

  • Have Positive public relation image and working relationships

  • Obtain necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence

  • Complete all mandatory requirements, including annual safety films, CPR, infection control and annual physical

  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department and hospital goals including:

  • Attend and participate in team meetings

  • Volunteer or accept assignment for projects

  • Mission, vision and team ground rules

  • Demonstrate documentation on patient care records and unit forms


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Valid California Registered Nurse licensure.

  • Valid BLS

  • Board Certification in Nursing Leadership (NE-BC, NEA-BC or CNML) required within 2 years of hire for new managers without experience

  • Board Certification in Nursing Leadership (NE-BC, NEA-BC or CNML) required within 1 year of hire for incumbent

  • 3 years experience as a Registered Nurse

  • Able to prioritize, organize, and coordinate patient care

  • Able to effectively work with patients, visitors, staff and management at all levels

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing

  • Management experience
