Providence is calling a Pharmacy Technician (Full time/Day shift) to Providence Saint Johns Medical Foundation in Santa Monica, CA.

We are seeking a Pharmacy Technician who will support and assist in the coordination of Pharmacy Services activities including medication refills and prior authorization claims under the supervision of the Advanced Practice Pharmacist.

  • Regular office hours Monday through Friday eight (8) hours shifts

  • Manage medication refills utilizing standardized protocols

  • Collect , organize , and evaluate relevant patient information (i.e. medical diagnosis, laboratory values, medications used) from patient’s chart or by contacting the medical staff physicians

  • Manage medication prior authorization requests

  • Contact health plan or pharmacy for additional information

  • Assist pharmacist in health care insurance for non-covered medications

  • Complete initial competency assessment requirements, including age specific competencies for all patients to whom pharmaceutical care is provided; successfully completes annual competency assessment exams

  • Prioritize work effectively

  • Contribute to quality improvement activities and helps implement change

  • Answer the phone calls

  • Attend and participates in team meetings

  • Use appropriate and courteous phone etiquette

  • Support and assist the pharmacist in the coordination of pharmacy services

  • Generate required reports

  • Utilize fax machine, photocopier

  • Perform job functions with minimum errors

  • Document the services provided in patient’s chart using EPIC

  • Complete tasks in timely manner

  • Perform required tasks in appropriate time frame

  • Is aware of workload and prioritizes effectively

  • Take initiative during slow times to help other co-workers, start preparing for future tasks, and help the Advance Practice Pharmacist

  • Perform/participate in team activities/goal attainment

  • Participate in team administrative functions as directed (scheduling, minutes, QA reviews, etc.)

  • Staffs refill and prior authorizations for the primary care offices.

  • Performs job functions with minimum errors

  • Fax, photocopy, and other administrative duties


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement

  • Current California Pharmacy technician license

  • Working knowledge of prescriptions plans and health insurances

  • Knowledge of managed care principles

  • Some knowledge of health care financial and payer issues

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

  • Ability to work cooperatively with many people

  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate work with others

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to apply sound judgment

  • Ability to work independently but under the supervision of a pharmacist

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and other applications

  • Excellent oral and communication skills

  • Successful passing of a competency test

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year experience as a pharmacy technician in an outpatient, ambulatory care, retail, or managed care setting, or completion of a technician training program, with a demonstrated ability to learn technical skills

  • Pharmacy prior authorization experience

  • Managed care experience

  • Experience using electronic medical records
