We are seeking a Point of Care Coordinator who will utilize professional knowledge, skills and judgment to perform a variety of technical, clerical, physical and quality assurance functions. The Point of Card Coord works independently and serves as a resource for all of point of care testing. In addition, performs training and teaching functions.

In this position you will:

  • Oversee point of care testing of patient specimens as needed for test ordered and follows through with problems and issues regarding quality of samples.

  • Oversee patient testing analyses, organizing, prioritizing work as appropriate to meet established turnaround times.

  • Monitor quality control responding to out of range results and takes appropriate action by following up with nursing and lab management.

  • Review and evaluate nursing results to determine accuracy and reasonableness utilizing delta checks, analyzer flags, etc. to determine discrepancies or problems with specimens. Either acts to resolve problem or refers problem to nursing and lab management.

  • Accurately enter patient testing data and comments when necessary. Documents corrections appropriately when needed.

  • Perform linearity & calibration, and calibration verification on instrumentation as necessary and appropriate. Along with validation of new instrumentation or new testing as required.

  • Review the reporting of critical values by nursing and follows up with required repeat testing as well as follow up specimens to lab for testing. Any testing delays and failure to follow procedure is reported to nursing management.

  • Oversee the work of nurses performing point of care testing as necessary and appropriate. Contributes to teaching/training and competency evaluations of staff.

  • Assist in ordering, stocking, cleaning, and other general maintenance activities.

  • Report all variances/discrepancies per laboratory Occurrence Management policy. Keeps current with communications (i.e. reading emails, technical communications, new procedures). Completes own license requirements in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate training and/or teaching of nursing trainers. Completes necessary evaluation forms, grades tests and acts as a resource. Develops and maintains training objectives and other training materials. Coordinates and communicates progress to nursing and lab management.

  • Prepare competency materials (unknowns, quizzes, etc.) for nursing performing point of care testing and teaches/trains new nursing hires performing point of care testing. Coordinates, communicates training progress and outcomes with management.

  • Research, validate and implement new testing platforms.

  • Author, review and update relevant procedures.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Current California State License for Clinical Laboratory Scientist (generalist or specialist as applicable).

  • One (1) year experience in a clinical laboratory.

  • Maintains technical knowledge sufficient to respond to needs.

  • Ability to interpret test results.

  • Ability to problem solve within scope of training.

  • Ability to perform intermediate computer functions.

  • Ability to interact with other healthcare staff members in a professional courteous manner and demonstrates good communication / telephone skills.

  • Ability to communicate and instruct technical knowledge clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

  • Ability to follow directions regarding assigned tasks, dealing with priority tasks first, then complete remaining tasks within the established time frames.

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and maintain a pace appropriate to the workload.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • ASCP certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

  • Experience in teaching or training.
