Providence Health & Services Research Pharmacist in Santa Monica, California
Providence is calling a Research Pharmacist (Full Time/Day Shift) to John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, CA.
We are seeking a Research Pharmacist who will oversee the Investigational Drug Pharmacy services for the Providence Los Angeles Research Center. He or she will provide expertise in clinical research trial execution including but not limited to scientific, clinical, and administrative functions. Representative duties such as tasks related to medication receipt, dispensing, compounding, inventory and patient counseling; communicate with and coordinate pharmacy services across different ministries with principal investigator, clinical research teams, study sponsor, hospital, and or satellite pharmacy where needed; responsible for EMR study protocol specific build, revision, and validation; participation in clinical trial and or protocol review committees, study team meetings, regional and system subcommittees supporting regional research; maintain pharmacy practice standards of performance as well as in accordance with ICH GCP, FDA, federal, state and local laws; actively promote good public relations and exceptional customer service.
The Research Pharmacist will serve as a resource for all Providence Health and Services Southern California ministries.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

Consistently demonstrate and incorporate principles of safety and infection control into daily activities as outlined in Environment of Care, Infection Control, and Exposure Control manuals and department safety policies/procedures. Consistently use personal protective equipment as required and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential for contact with blood, body fluids, chemicals and/or other hazardous materials. Maintain knowledge of work-appropriate aspects of environment of care programs, complies with policies and reports unsafe conditions. Successfully complete Environment of Care Health stream modules in the required timeframes and participate in fire drills and emergency exercises
Develop individual objectives consistent with the Providence Health and Services, Southern California strategic objectives, measures, and reports on individual objectives quarterly
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
Maintain pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviews professional publications; establishes personal networks; participates in professional societies
Review protocols for Providence Health and Services, Southern California clinical investigational product trials, as required
Liaise with Principal Investigators and/or research personnel to establish pharmacy’s role for a given study, determines fee schedules, and implements dispensing and compounding procedures
Communicate with and train staff participating in any aspect of a clinical trial that uses investigational products
Manage pharmacy investigational product services software, including any applicable Clinical Trial Management Systems, and supports pharmacy staff with associated duties
Support pharmacy personnel with the maintenance of a pharmacy binder which contains (for each study) a study summary, protocol, dispensing procedures, completed samples of required paperwork, dispensing checklist, fee schedule, billing procedures, and any other relevant materials for each investigational trial
Maintain responsibility for the oversight of the inventory for clinical investigational product; collaborate with pharmacy personnel on orders, replaces and returns study materials, as required
As necessary, orient other pharmacy staff with respect to clinical investigational products
Promote professional development of staff; participate in relevant research steering committees, clinical trial/protocol review committees, work groups, and regional and system research pharmacy committees and initiatives
Participate in the orientation and training of new employees and pharmacy residents, as needed
Work closely and collaboratively with Principal Investigator and research staff; provides drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals as related to investigational products
Monitor pharmacy activities, as needed, to ensure adherence to study protocols, storage, dispensing accountability, and destruction procedures
Complete and submit the EPIC build submission form, assists study personnel with Beacon protocol build submission, and coordinate the final Beacon protocol validation online meeting among all the stakeholders
Collaborate with each ministries pharmacists including shared participation/attendance in local study team meetings as well as support research staff, nurses and investigators with working outcomes and initiatives
Support Regional Research Pharmacist and perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the Providence Los Angeles Research Center
Required qualifications for this position include:
PharmD in Accredited school of pharmacy
State of California Pharm D License
Minimum of two (2) years either hospital and/or clinical research pharmacist experience and/or inpatient pharmacy residency/fellowship, experience in sterile compounding and expertise of USP 797/800 regulations
Highly thorough and dependable
Clinical research terminology, principles of research design, investigational product, randomization, source document creation/use, and data entry query resolution
Foundational knowledge in the areas of clinical research ethics, historical and current regulatory considerations, and professional standards of clinical research
Ability to prioritize, organize, plan, and implement services as well as handle multiple projects/problems simultaneously
Demonstrate communication, leadership, and team building skills: evidence of this should include dealing well with people, effective problem solving, appropriately confronting issues, motivating others as individuals and as groups, planning, organizing and directing the activities of others
Demonstrate skill in working with minimal supervision. Effective written and verbal communication
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Experience in the oncology setting and with EPIC/Beacon EMR, CCRP, CCRA, or similar research-related certification preferred. Current, active and unrestricted California License to practice pharmacy
