We are seeking a Registered Nurse - Infection Prevention who will be responsible for identifying healthcare-associated infection risks to patients and personnel through surveillance, observation and assessment. The IP specializes in developing, implementing, monitoring and reporting infection risk-reduction strategies through collaboration with all levels of personnel. The IP researches and develops infection control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements, nationally-recognized infection prevention and control guidelines, and recognized best practices under the guidance of the Director. The IP gathers and analyzes epidemiologic data, develops reports to communicate findings and manage performance improvement activities to reduce infection risks. The IP must have effective written & oral communication skills, strong team participation and management skills and be able to demonstrate meticulous attention to accuracy with data collection and reporting.

In this position you will:

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, surveillance, analysis, reporting, and recording activities as well as setting standards and evaluating compliance for practices that are associated with the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections

  • Act as a resource person for all departments of the hospital with reference to infection prevention and control

  • Assist Director with hospital-wide infection prevention education. Complies with the mandates of required accrediting and regulatory agencies and communicates pertinent information to staff

  • Assist the Director with the functional components of the infection prevention program as described in the Infection Prevention Risk Assessment and Program Plan with input from the Infection Prevention Committee

  • Institute appropriate infection prevention measures deemed necessary when it is reasonably felt there is a danger to any patient, staff member, visitor, or the environment

  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and standards of care relating to infection prevention that are based on epidemiologically sound practices

  • Collaborate with department managers and team leaders to assess individual department needs regarding education for practical and effective patient management practices that minimize the risk of infection

  • Act as an infection prevention resource to hospital committees (such as, Environment of Care, Hand Hygiene Task Force, etc.)

  • Design and present continuing education programs, as needed. Ensure that infection prevention practices and policies applicable to all employees and specific departments are presented at orientation and reviewed at annual education

  • Provide education, consultation and guidance to hospital staff, medical staff, patients, families, and visitors regarding infection prevention issues

  • Participate in data analysis and performance improvement activities as outlined in the Infection Prevention Program Plan

  • Participate in hospital and community activities which promote self-growth and the development of high standards of professional infection prevention practices

  • Maintain membership in the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), specifically Greater Los Angeles APIC and CA APIC (CACC)

  • Provide input into the employee health program and policies related to screening employees, providing education and immunoprophylaxis, and management of employee exposure to infectious diseases.

  • Observes hospital policies and procedures

  • Assist the Director as a liaison to public health authorities and hospital surveyors from the various accrediting bodies (such as TJC, CMS, CDPH, etc.), as needed

  • Demonstrate competency in selected skills including, but not limited to:

  • Current NHSN criteria, as well as CDPH and CMS reporting requirements for Infection Prevention

  • Knowledge of current accrediting (such as, TJC) and regulatory agency requirements for infection prevention

  • Knowledge of epidemiologically sound infection prevention and control practices

  • Gathering, compiling, and analyzing data pertinent to infection prevention and control

  • Comply with all hospital and department standards

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regards to:

  • Attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality

  • Positive public relation image and working relationships

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence

  • Completing all mandatory requirements, including, but not limited to annual education and annual physical

  • Participates in the development and attainment of department and hospital goals including:

  • Attending and participating in team meetings

  • Volunteering or accepting assignment for projects

  • Mission, vision and team ground rules

  • Assists the Director in creating the annual Infection Prevention Risk Assessment and Program Plan with the guidance of the Infection Prevention Committee


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, Microbiology or other related field

  • Completion of specific Infection Prevention training such as APIC Epi 101 and/or 201, and/or National Health Care Safety Network (NHSN) surveillance training

  • 1 year Infection Preventio, preferably in at a teaching hospital, academic institution

  • Working knowledge of and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of epidemiology, clinical education and patient care management, microbiology, pathology, immunology, biostatistics, as well as hospital engineering and environmental services practices

  • Must have the ability to work closely with all personnel to promote compliance and gain cooperation in accomplishing effective change

  • Needs to be diplomatic, flexible and self-motivated

  • Knowledge of Infection Prevention principles and practices required

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of healthcare personnel in this and other healthcare facilities; public health services at the local, state, and national levels; and surveyors from regulatory agencies

  • Ability to take a leadership role in implementation of strategies designed for cost-effective prevention of transmissible diseases

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of adult education principles as they relate to educating and responding to hospital and external agency personnel

  • Extensive Computer knowledge including Microsoft Office, EPIC, Theradoc, NHSN, LA County DPH WebCMR, and Lawson

  • Ability to learn and adapt to hospital charting and the various electronic medical records systems

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, Microbiology or other related field
