Providence Student Nurse I - Telemetry in Santa Monica, California


Providence is calling a Student Nurse I to Telemetry for Per Diem Night Shift to Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA

We are seeking a Student Nurse I which is a unlicensed healthcare worker who will perform delegated routine, predictable patient care tasks under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) in an acute care environment. The RNSI is accountable for the delivery of safe, compassionate, evidence-based quality care to patients and families, based on individual physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and appropriate care strategies throughout the lifespan. Practice in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the ANA scope and standards of practice. Key functions and specific skills for the job are found in the unit specific onboarding checklist and in standards that are applicable to the specialty.

In this position you will:

  • Check patient’s I.D. band daily for accuracy

  • Assist with patient admitting/transfer/discharge:

  • Set-up room, including monitor equipment, as directed by RN

  • Orient patient to environment and routine

  • Problem solve and serve patient needs

  • Care for/label/store patient personal property

  • Label room and equipment to identify by patient

  • Observe and report data collection to RN

  • Document as instructed in EPIC

  • Perform data collection through physical observation

  • Accompany or transport patient

  • Provide direct patient care tasks/duties that have been delegated by the RN

  • Recognize and report concerns and variations from normal values immediately to the RN

  • ake vital signs, weight as assigned

  • Place, change, remove simple dressings (non-sterile)

  • Perform/record finger stick blood sugars

  • Perform pulse oximeter screening

  • Apply, change, remove external catheters

  • Perform pre-surgical preps, as requested

  • Ambulate, reposition patient and perform range of motion (ROM)

  • Apply, change patient restraints according to established policy

  • Apply K-pads, cold packs and hyper/hypothermic blankets

  • Empty Jackson-Pratt and Hemovac devices

  • Apply anti-thromboembolic hose, sequential TED hose and Plexipulse

  • Perform EKGs

  • Calculate fluid intake and output, calculate % meal eaten

  • Empty and change drainage containers, report and record contents

  • Perform and record NG, emesis, stool, urine collection

  • Perform tray/supply set-up for a bedside procedure

  • Provide post mortem care

  • Assist with complex feedings

  • Assist in IV set-up (gather supplies, pump)

  • Incentive spirometry follow-up and coaching

  • Assist with orthopedic equipment/applications, as directed

  • Perform tap water enemas and Harris flushes

  • Remove nasogastric tube

  • Perform oral suctioning

  • Collect urine specimen

  • Collect oral sputum specimen

  • Change peripads

  • Personal hygiene:

  • Bath patient or assist

  • Provide back care, including massage

  • Provide oral hygiene and dental care

  • Provide hair care, including shampoo and brushing

  • Provide nail care on hands and feet

  • Provide indwelling urinary catheter care

  • Shave patients

  • Perform transportation of patients, lifting support with appropriate lift equipment, as assigned

  • Initiate or support CPR; follow directions appropriately in emergency situations; report observations

  • Areas of Emphasis performed under the DIERCT supervision of an RN, and after skill validation within academic environment:

  • Neuro and/or vascular circulation checks

  • Urinary catheter insertion, irrigation, and removal

  • Skin/decubitus care, Stage I through IV

  • Orthopedic pin care

  • Nasogastric tube insertion, irrigation and removal

  • Tube feedings, with the exception of initial feedings

  • IV flow rate adjustment

  • Peripheral IV’s and PRN adapter discontinuation

  • Low flow oxygen therapy initiation with nasal cannula and simple mask

  • Heart rhythm monitoring of patients on central cardiac monitoring

  • Ensure proper monitoring of patients heart rhythms

  • Document the same in 24-hour Nursing Record

  • Document and informs Patient Care Leader caring for patient of any changes in heart rhythm

  • Report malfunctioning equipment for repair as soon as possible

  • Provide patient education about medications, procedures, plan of care, and discharge instructions

  • Documentation/Information Management:

  • Responsible for timely, accurate and concise EPIC documentation

  • Perform documentation and records: Vital signs, weight, container contents (drainage), fluid intake and output, and % of food eaten, and all patient interventions

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Hospital Information Systems

  • Communicate patient information and changes to RN

  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and hospital related information


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Provide evidence of current enrollment, in good standing, in an accredited BSN or Entry Level Master’s program (ELM) for registered nursing

  • Provide evidence of successful completion of an initial clinical care course (typically within the first clinical semester) within the enrolled nursing program

  • Documentation as a Certified Nursing Assistant by the State of California may be required in some clinical areas

  • Documentation of current completion of American Heart Basic Life Support

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider card must be from the following authorized governing bodies: American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Military Training Network (MTN) upon hire

  • Require ability to organize and prioritize work to complete assignments in a timely and effective manner

  • Proficiency with Information Technology; such as electronic health records, communications systems, computers and equipment necessary to perform essential functions of the position

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that convey a positive and supportive attitude

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities, urgent responses, and challenging situations
